mwbwTūrān (mwcain persiano توران‎) è l'antico nome mwcqiranicocite-ref-1[1] dell'mwdgAsia centrale. Letteralmente significa "la terra dei Tur". Originariamente le popolazioni del Tūrān erano di etnia mwdwiranica, anche se nel corso della storia la regione fu invasa a più riprese da popolazioni mweaturcofone, che oggi ne costituiscono la principale componente etnica. Geograficamente il mweqbassopiano turanico costituisce, assieme all'mwegaltopiano iranico, la regione della mwewGrande Persia.

Tūrān nell ' Avestā

Una delle più antiche testimonianze sui Turani si trova nel mwmwFarvardīn Yašt (Inno allo Spirito guardiano), inserito come XIII mwnayašt (inno) nella mwnqKordah Avestācite-ref-5[5] che secondo gli iranisti dovrebbero essere stato composto nel mwowV secolo a.C.cite-ref-6[6].

Lmwrw'mwsamwsqAvestā contiene i nomi di vari gruppi tribali che confinavano tra loro, tra cui i mwsgTūryacite-ref-8[8] Negli inni dellmwtw'mwuamwuqAvestā, l'aggettivo mwugTūrya è connesso a vari nemici dello mwuwZoroastrismo, tra i quali il re turanico Frankasiyancite-ref-9[9].

La parola ricorre in una sola circostanza nelle mwwqmwwgGāthā, segnatamente nella mwwwUštavaitī Gāthā:

Ricorre tuttavia venti volte nelle parti più recenti dellmwyw'mwzamwzqAvestā. Apparentemente non v'è alcuna differenza etnica fra mwzgTūrya e mwzwmwaaĀrya nellmwaq'mwagmwawAvestā, avendo entrambi nomi mwbaindoeuropei.

Tūrān nello Shahnameh

Secondo il racconto leggendario riportato nello mwcamwcqShahnameh,cite-ref-11[11] che ricostruisce mwdgmitologicamente la storia iranica dalla creazione del mondo alla conquista islamica, quindici secoli prima le tribù nomadi che abitavano i territori di Tūrān erano governate dal re Tūr, primogenito dell'imperatore mwdwFarīdūn.

Lo mweqmwegShahnameh associa i Turani con i mwewTurchi, sostenendo che la mwfaturchizzazione dell'mwfqAsia centrale fosse stata parzialmente completata durante quel periodo di tempo.cite-ref-12[12]. Tur/Turaj (Tuzh in mwggmedio-persianocite-ref-13[13]) è il figlio del re Farīdūn nell'antica mitologia iranica. Nello mwhwShāhnāmeh è identificato con i Turchicite-ref-14[14] sebbene culturalmente non ci sia alcuna relazione fra i Turanici dello mwjaShahnameh e la cultura degli antichi Turchicite-ref-15[15].

A partire da questo racconto mwkgmitologico, in mwkwOccidente nel mwlaXIX secolo e fino ai primi del mwlqXX, il termine "turanico" occorse per identificare i mwlgturcofoni, mwlwi parlanti lingue ugriche e mwmai parlanti lingue uralichecite-ref-16[16].
